“Surprise!! 1989 (Taylor’s Version) is on its way to you,” reads the post, which revealed the new album cover to the rest of the world. “The 1989 album changed my life in countless ways, and it fills me with such excitement to announce that my version of it will be out October 27th.” (The re-release date holds special significance too, as 1989 dropped on the same date in 2014.)

Swift sang on “Shake It Off” as a women who is aware of what people say about her, and while the song’s shoehorned moral demands that the gossip doesn’t matter, we all know the power of looking, including Taylor. Taylor in particular. Who else would create a stunning song about falling for her ex and then use five-sixths of his last name as the title?

This was not an album that attracted casual speculation. After all of the hints, there was almost no space for guesswork. Its unusual tourism jingle introduction wasn’t just this decade’s most apparent commercial placement; it also set the tone for all the tracks that followed, as if asking you to pin each word to a paparazzi photo. Swift even described her clothing to get you started.
